A certified trichologist with 25+ years behind the chair on the half of the problem almost no one sells you a product for.
Most hair routines are built entirely around growing hair. Almost none of them are built around keeping it — and that gap is where months of progress quietly disappear.
Summary: Length is what you grow minus what you lose along the way. Breakage, dryness and fragile ends work against retained length every day, and a routine that changes every three weeks never addresses the scalp underneath any of it. This article explains the retention gap, why an ingredient isn't a system, and how a Miami trichologist's scalp-first approach — Restore, Regrow, Retain — is built around consistency rather than a promised timeline.
Strands on a white sink edge or caught in a wide-tooth comb, shot from above in warm window light. A real bathroom, a real countertop. Documentary, never styled.
The part you notice first
The strands fanned across the white of the sink. The ones wrapped around your fingers when you rinse out the conditioner. The small dark nest you pull from the brush and drop in the bin without really looking at it, because looking at it makes it real.
You tell yourself it’s normal. Everyone sheds. And that’s true.
But then you do the thing you always do. You open your camera roll, scroll back to the photo from March, and hold it up next to the mirror. Same length. Same place. Same thin, see-through ends.
Meanwhile the shelf keeps filling up. The rosemary oil half your timeline swore by. The biotin gummies you take most days. The bond-repair mask. The growth serum with the little dropper. The scalp scrub you bought in July and used twice.
Maybe the thing you assumed was the problem isn't actually the problem.
The reframe
Minimal brand-palette diagram: a bucket filling from above with a visible split near the base, or a single strand drawn from root to fragile end. Flat, botanical-clean, sage and clay on off-white. Must read at 375px.
Reason 01 — the problem may not be growth
Picture a bucket under a running tap. You want the level to rise, so you do the obvious thing. You turn the tap up. You buy a better tap. You read about taps. You try seven different taps.
But there’s a small split near the bottom of the bucket. And every time you check the level, it’s roughly where it was last month. The tap was never the problem.
Length is not just what you grow. Length is what you grow minus what you lose along the way. So when someone says “my hair doesn’t grow,” the more useful version of that sentence is often: my routine may not be helping me keep the hair I’m already growing.
How the gap opens
Cold comfort, but useful: nothing dramatic has to happen for a year of growth to become no visible change. It happens in four ordinary steps.
This part is usually working. It's also the only part every 'hair growth' product on your shelf is aimed at.

New hair forms at the scalp
This part is usually working. It's also the only part every 'hair growth' product on your shelf is aimed at.
This is one commonly overlooked factor, not a diagnosis. Hair changes for many reasons — some of them medical, hormonal, nutritional or genetic — and those deserve a conversation with a physician or dermatologist.
Overhead flat-lay, 10–15 mismatched half-used products on linen, raw wood or kraft paper. Unstyled and slightly imperfect — a photograph of a real cabinet, not a merchandising shot.
Reason 02 — the product graveyard
Go and open the cabinet. Actually open it. Count the bottles — the oils, the serums, the two shampoos you alternate for no particular reason, the gummies, the mask, the leave-in, the spray you bought because it was on sale.
Now the uncomfortable question: how many did you use consistently, in the same order, for more than three weeks?
This isn’t an argument that everything in there is bad. Plenty of it contains perfectly good ingredients. Rotating through fifteen of them, two or three weeks at a time, isn’t fifteen attempts at a routine. It’s fifteen interruptions of one.

What Sayblee teaches
Keep a sequence
Sayblee Darsale in her Miami salon or treatment room. Working, not posing — hands in someone's hair, or mid-consultation. Warm directional daylight, shadows allowed. The most important image on the page.
Reason 03 — a different approach
Sayblee Darsale was ten years old when a neighbour in Liberia told her she had a gift for doing hair — and that in America, people are paid for their gifts.
What she found when she got to America was a hair culture built on chemical relaxers. She used them on her own thick, kinky hair. They damaged it. Someone eventually told her something she never forgot: if you don’t stop relaxing your hair, you’ll go bald by fifty.
She braided hair to get through college, then went to beauty school — and what she saw there bothered her enough that she made herself a promise: someday she would develop a safe, healthy hair product. A manufacturer she trusted sold her ingredients out from under her, so she started making the formulas herself. Her first ingredient order cost $247.58.
In 2011 she established Sayblee as a certified trichologist, with a plant-based, vegan-certified formula of her own, made by hand in Miami. And across twenty-five-plus years she kept seeing the same pattern walk through the door: women doing a great deal to their hair, still watching the same inch disappear, because the scalp had never been part of the plan.
“The goal has always been to make their hair and scalp healthy.”
Sayblee Darsale, founder

The treatment
A 4 oz plant-based scalp and hair treatment, formulated by a certified trichologist. It goes on the scalp first, then works through the strands, as one step in a repeatable wash-day routine.
Not a leave-on serum you dab on and hope about. A step you do, the same way, every time — which is the entire point.

What's in it
Every descriptor below is written in cosmetic terms. No ingredient here is described as causing growth, and no percentages are claimed.
Rosemary
A botanical with a long history of traditional use in scalp care, and the signature of Sayblee's clarifying line.
Flaxseed
Adds slip and conditioning — the quality that makes hair easier to handle and detangle without force.
Tamanu & sesame
Rich plant oils used to condition scalp and hair and support a softer, more comfortable feel.
Neem
A traditional botanical in scalp care, part of the treatment's scalp-focused blend.
Aloe vera
Moisture and a soothing feel on the scalp — one of the most familiar botanicals in the category, for good reason.
Meadowfoam seed
A lightweight oil that helps hair feel smooth and sealed rather than coated or heavy.
Camelina & sunflower
Light plant oils that carry the blend and support its conditioning feel.
Sage, ylang ylang, lavender
Botanical aromatics — part of why the treatment feels like a ritual rather than a chore, which matters when the goal is doing it every week.

Reason 04 — the method
Most hair growth marketing sells you a timeline — week one this, month three a thicker ponytail. Sayblee doesn't, and won't. Hair is individual and nobody can honestly promise you a date. What can be described is the approach.
Stop changing products and start repeating one sequence. Cleanse, treat the scalp, condition, moisturise — the same way, every wash day, long enough for it to mean something.

Restore — build the routine first
Stop changing products and start repeating one sequence. Cleanse, treat the scalp, condition, moisturise — the same way, every wash day, long enough for it to mean something.
None of this is a protocol and none of it is medical. It's a way of spending your hair-care effort — on the scalp, and on keeping what you've got, instead of entirely on the next promised inch.
Reason 05 — the retention gap closes
Individual experiences. Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. ‡
“These products have been bringing my hair back to life. Thickness, moisture, retention.”
“Before Sayblee, my hairline was thinning — now it's showing peach fuzz and the rest is shining brighter.”
“When I looked in the mirror tonight I noticed new growth. This Hair Growth Treatment is coming through.”
Return or exchange within 90 days of your order date. That's long enough to actually keep a routine for a few months and decide honestly — not long enough to be a technicality you'd never use. If your hair doesn't feel more conditioned, if the routine doesn't fit your wash day, if it simply isn't what you hoped: return it.
